Welcome to History 1301 on the web. This course is built for students who are self-motivated, interested in taking some side roads in seach of history and very familiar with the internet. If you're this kind of student, this class will be very rewarding.
First things first: you must have regular access to the internet to succeed in this class. While high-speed access is a plus, dial-up will work, but will take quite a bit longer to access some sites you'll need to visit. You will be required to read a fair amount for this class, the more attention paid to your work, the better result (grade) you'll get. It's just that simple.
Before we go any farther, please complete and send me the orientation questionnaire. This is your first assignment. I won't accept any other assignments if you haven't completed this first.
For more about how the course works, see the syllabus.
Send all work, correspondence and questions to me here:
Required book:
Flyover History: Remembering Our Ignored Past- Volume I (7th Edition)
- Myers, Hines, & Field
Publisher: Thomson Learning Custom Publishing;
ISBN: 0-7593-1872-7
If there are general announcements, changs in schedule or other news related to the entire class, I'll post them on the bulletin board. Check it frequently, things can change.
Once you've finished the orientation, take a tour of the site. Browse the class calendar below and take a look at the themes offered. You'll notice there are 12 different themes, and we have just over four weeks of classes this summer. That means you aren't required to complete every single theme. You choose the nine themes in which you're most interested (three from each category) and skip the ones in each category that you don't want to do.
Due dates for each of the themes is listed, and you must strictly observe these deadlines. I don't take late work. Let me repeat that: I don't take late work. Don't blame tardiness on losing files, unsent emails, or dogs eating your hard drive. Don't wait until the last minute to complete your assignments, so if there is a problem, we can correct it before you miss the deadline. If you miss a deadline, that's it. Choose another theme in the category to make your three.
If you choose to finish themes earlier than the deadline, however, I will happily take them.
When I receive your work, I will reply and let you know it arrived on time. I won't write a message, just hit the reply button so you know I got it. When you send emails to me, please put the your name and the theme number of the assignment you're sending.
John Smith, History 1301 Theme 1 - is what should appear in the subject line. It's difficult to tell that hubbabubba239@yahoo.com is in real life John Smith of this history class.
In each of the themes, there are a handful of small assignments for you to complete. Simply read the directions, follow them to the letter and send me your work for that theme by the deadline listed in the main section of the calendar. It's really pretty simple.
When sending your work, send it all in one Microsoft Word attachent. Please don't send anything in another word processing program. If you use another word processing program, copy your assignment and paste it into the body of an email. I won't spend time trying to find a program that can translate documents from obscure programs to something I can read.
When you write your assignments, make sure you're writing in complete sentences, that you proofread and check for grammar problems, spelling mistakes, and other messy little problems that trip people up. The best work will be free of these issues.
I'll grade your assignments as quickly as possible, but it wil take a few days. As soon as your work is graded, you'll get an email with your grade in it.
Attention: Check the deadline dates carefully. Assignments are due by midnight on the deadline listed.
